ARTICLE: The Prayer that Killed the Prayer Meeting by David Smithers
Is it really possible for just one prayer to kill a prayer meeting? As strange as it may seem there is a kind of “praying” that has the potential to definitely hinder or even kill our corporate prayer meetings. I’m sad to say I have witnessed it happen many, many times, so if you are especially called to encourage and lead a corporate prayer meeting you will greatly benefit from the following exhortations.
The type of prayer that too often kills our prayer meetings is that religious oratory that pretends to address God but is actually designed to teach or correct men. Some believers are frequently compelled to showcase their spiritual gifts and biblical insights under the pretense of interceding during a corporate prayer meeting. >>Julianne writes: This is how God brought the Haystack to our campus… " Last semester this guy and I were talking about starting a prayer group on campus just to pray for the students here at SBU and that God would really move on our campus. Then, this summer, God really laid it on my heart to pray for missions more. I had planned on starting a women's prayer tea once a week so girls could come over for tea and just pray for missions. Then, we had this missions type retreat for the weekend for our Intercultural Studies Majors, and other missions minded folks, and from that weekend I decided not to just limit it to women...I felt the guys probably wouldn't start their own group so we should just have a prayer time for everyone. One of the missionaries who spoke that weekend was Jess Jenkins, IMB missionary to the Philippines. He is the one who told me about SVM2 and hooked me up with the website. I then read it and just decided that that was what we were going to do. :)
I set up a time, Fridays at 10am, and set up a group on facebook and invited everyone that I knew, calling it "The Haystack." Our first meeting we had 10 people. Several of my friends were really excited about it and had felt God calling them to do something similar. Then we had our missions week here at school a few weeks ago. I told the missions office about our prayer group and they let us make a chapel announcement with missions chapel, set up a booth to tell others about it at the fair where they introduced the new mission trips, came and led us in prayer for missions week and the students deciding to go on mission trips, and even let us post announcements on our school's web announcement page.
We've have a lot of different people come, some regulars, and new ones every week so far. There were a lot of people who wanted to do it but couldn't because of the time, so just this week we started 2 more groups to meet at different times. Last night was the first meeting at 6pm on Mondays, with 4 people there. Thursday @ 3pm will be our next new meeting.
Last Friday I introduced the SVM2uesdays at our meeting and emailed everyone the website to check it out. Today is the first day that some of us are joining in...my stomach just growled as I typed that! lol....”
