Abandoned Times - June 2003

It's time to get involved with this chapter in the story of how God is accomplishing His global purpose among this generation ...

Abandoned Times

SVM2 is a cross-organizational, cross-denominational movement calling a new generation of message bearers to a life of abandoned devotion to Christ and the urgent global proclamation of His gospel.

Why Me?

How do you respond when hardships and unpleasant circumstances arise in your life?  Complaints, harsh reactions, anger, retaliation, criticism, even blaming God are all common reactions to pain.  Whether the pain is inflicted by others (often those closest to us) or by circumstances in life, another response is available to believers. We can position ourselves humbly before God asking, "What are you trying to teach me?"  This is the million dollar question that will revolutionize your life if you make a habit of asking it in every difficult situation. The Lord doesn't waste any experiences in our lives, but uses every one of them to build us, shape us, mold us, break us, and make us more like Jesus.  The pruning hand of God hurts!  Much of the junk we deal with doesn't get weeded out easily. But if we truly desire to please Him and see His fruit in our lives, we can embrace this process, letting the Lord do what He wants in and through us.

Look at every Biblical character who accomplished anything for God.  Each of them endured painful experiences and challenges , yet they responded by pouring themselves out in utter dependence on Him.  Being able to recognize God's shaping processes is pivotal to the growth of every young leader.  After David had been anointed (future) king, he was persistently pursued by Saul.  Often despairing for his life, he still refused to kill Saul - or even speak against him - when the opportunity came. While his integrity and character were severely tested during this time of hardship, he passed the tests faithfully!  Integrity may be the most important trait of a godly leader and God will consistently arranges opportunities for us to be tested in this area. For many of us, these lessons in character come again and again.

A.W.Tozer once wrote, "The popular notion that the first obligation of the church is to spread the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth is false. Her first obligation is to be spiritually worthy to spread it!"  Do you want to be effective for the Kingdom of God globally?  Then learn the lessons that every man and woman of God has had to learn.  Press into God like never before in the middle of hardship and embrace what He's trying to work into you, allowing Him to teach you His ways, no matter what the cost.

Happenings

An exciting gathering in Texas at the end of May confirmed that God is indeed raising up many young men and women who are commited to Christ and His plan for this generation worldwide.  OneDay03 brought 10's of thousands of students and others together for a time of fasting, repentance and worship of a Holy God.  Several members of the SVM2 team were privileged to serve in the Ministries Tent at OneDay by offering practical, one-on-one guidance as well helping students connect with the vision of how God is at work on a global scale.  A series of displays in the front of the tent told the story of the first Student Volunteer Movement and let them know what God can do in our time with students like them!

There was a repeated emphasis on missions from the platform at OneDay as one response to the call to abandoned devotion to Christ. John Piper talked about his prayer for 200,000 young adults from this generation to be sent out, while Heather Mercer, recently imprisoned while serving in Afghanistan and co-author of Prisoners of Hope also gave a stirring call.  Thousands stood in response to her challenge to GO!

Abandoned Devotion Prayer Gatherings

The purpose of abandoned devotion prayer gatherings is to seek the face of God for an outpouring of missionary vision on today's generation of young adults.  This is accomplished by gathering young people together from various streams in the body of Christ and seeking God on behalf of this generation all over the world. Regional Prayer Gatherings are planned for ...

Atlanta on October  4      Boston on October 18

Los Angeles on November 1  and  Denver on November 15

...Watch for more details on locations and how you can participate in these events.

Prayer Focus

1)      Pray that God would fill the void of male student leadership on campuses around North America... that He would speak to and raise up young men with a passion to reach the nations in our day!

2)      Pray for new and effective cross-cultural training models to be started throughout the world to train the multitudes of young adults God is bringing forth to help proclaim His gospel on the earth.  One of the greatest global mission needs is effective training!

4)      Pray that the true awe of God would enter the hearts and minds of Christian young adults throughout the world, delivering them from small thinking about the nature of God.

Recommended Books for Message Bearers

The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer offers guidance for recapturing a sense of God's majesty and walking it out daily by living in the Spirit.  It shows how to rejuvenate your prayer life, meditate more reverently, understand God more deeply and experience His presence in our daily lives.

Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret  by Howard Taylor.  From J. Hudson Taylor's early life in England, through the founding of the China Inland Mission, to reaching millions of pagan Chinese, his life of complete faith gives glorious testimony to God. His spiritual insights are very relevant for us today.

The Calvary Road by Roy Hession profiles the nature of religious revival and lays out the essence of the activity of God in the heart of the hungry seeker.  Hession describes why it is important for Christians to walk in openness, brokenness and transparency.  It would be easy to read this book in one sitting, but it may be kind of book you'll want to read again and again.
