While driving to town the other day I suddenly found myself in the middle of an ugly traffic jam. What is usually a quiet stretch of country highway had overnight become a tangle of construction workers, flashing orange signs and bumper to bumper traffic. Everyone was forced to quickly stop and wait their turn to follow the newly imposed directions and detours. Then one after another, seemingly without any hesitation, all the cars sped away from their original course in pursuit of smoother traveling. The old highway ahead of us was unquestionably rough and partially unpaved, but it was still open to traffic and definitely the most direct route to town.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word "grace"? For most believers it is the idea of God's unmerited favor and mercy - His love being poured out upon me who am so undeserving of receiving it. My salvation being accomplished and secured through nothing I could ever do but through the tortuous death and resurrection of the unblemished God-Man. Generally when grace is spoken of in the church today this is the concept that is being communicated. Yet the Scriptures use this particular meaning of the term less then half of the times that it is spoken. So what is the other side of "grace"? Every few years a new paradigm comes along and changes the way we think and talk about important and historic concepts. This is true in many areas of life including missions. A few years ago the "new" thing in mission circles was "Unreached People Groups" or UPG's; a people group among which there is no indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize this people group.[1] This perspective is now widely accepted and has helped to focus more Kingdom resources on those with the least opportunity to hear about the King. More recently, mission leaders have begun to talk about a new paradigm, "Church Planting Movements" or CPM. David Garrison is a well known proponent of this idea. As I was collating the reports for the Student Leaders Training Conference and the Roundtable Dialogue facilitated by Student Volunteer Movement 2 (SVM2) and hosted by Nigeria Evangelical Missions Association (NEMA) through the Youth and Student Co-Mission (a track to stimulate greater involvement of Nigerian Christian Students in Missions and to help them cultivate campus-wide, N=non-denominational student mission movements on their campuses) it dawned on me that God is quietly reawakening the emerging generation of Nigeria to posses the nation for him.
